Director Walter told the committee that the county recently ran a half-day climate emergency public-health preparedness training attended by about 18 municipal leaders from towns including Hurley, Gardiner, Saugerties, Rosendale, Kingston, Rochester, Marlborough, New Paltz and Esopus. Presentations from Cornell Cooperative Extension covered resilient community planning and identification of vulnerable populations; the American Red Cross addressed shelter readiness and partner roles.
Ulster County Department of Health staff demonstrated shelter preparedness topics such as ventilation, air cleaning (HEPA filters and HVAC considerations), PPE stockpiles, and decision-making protocols for opening shelters. Participants completed tabletop flood-response exercises and drafted 30-day action plans for their municipalities.
Director Walter said the county purchased a HEPA air filter for each participating municipality to place in a designated shelter space and noted a positive post-training survey response that showed improved readiness and knowledge of community resources. She offered to share slides and follow-up resources via the committee OneDrive and to make staff available for municipality-specific consultations.
