Mountainside council approves emergency pool repairs, schedules public forums on ageing facility

The Borough of Mountainside’s governing body on Tuesday approved an emergency $100,000 appropriation to cover electrical repairs at the municipal pool and authorized a separate emergency contract with CFM Construction Inc. to perform the work, with the contract capped at $100,000.
The mayor told residents the pool is “now 60 years old” and that the borough’s maintenance program has extended its life “10 to 15 years” beyond comparable facilities. The council approved both emergency measures after members cited a pool manager’s memorandum describing an imminent hazard.
To give residents a chance to learn more before decisions are made, the mayor announced a pair of public sessions. “The first meeting is scheduled on June 29 at 7PM at the Mountainside Pool,” the mayor said, adding that the session will be informational “and questions from the residents are more than welcome. No potential fixes will be discussed at this session.” A follow-up meeting to present potential solutions is set for July 8 at 7PM at Burrell Hall.
Council members framed the action as necessary to protect public health and safety and to allow the pool to open and operate safely this season. Resolution 89-2026 created the emergency appropriation citing NJSA authority for emergency spending; resolution 90-2026 authorized the contractor named by the pool manager to proceed immediately.
Both motions were moved, seconded and carried on roll call. The borough said the appropriations will be provided for in the 2027 municipal pool utility budget.
