Salem council authorizes Viking Paint maintenance contracts for four city water towers

The Salem City Council on a single agenda voted to authorize four separate maintenance and rehabilitation contracts with Viking Paint LLC covering the city’s 75,000-, 150,000-, 400,000-gallon and industrial-park water towers.
Councilors heard a staff presentation that the contracts are part of a planned maintenance program across the city’s tanks. Staff said the work on each tower is structured so that larger rehabilitation happens first, then the towers move to routine inspection and maintenance under the contract. For one tower in the industrial park, staff noted the interior (dry area) requires work; the large new 400,000-gallon tower at County Road 2240 was identified as the new tank that must come online before some rehab work on an older tower can proceed.
Each resolution was read aloud by the clerk and discussed briefly. Council members moved and seconded adoption of each resolution individually; the chair called the votes and the measures were adopted.
Council did not attach conditions beyond the contract descriptions presented by staff. Staff also noted the pricing sheets in the packet illustrate higher near-term costs during major rehabs with decreasing future costs as work moves to inspections.
The contracts are authorized for the mayor to execute with Viking Paint LLC; specific contract scopes correspond to the individual towers listed in each resolution. The council took formal action on each contract during the meeting. The clerk completed the readings and the items were entered into the public record.
