Queenstown considers reducing bulk-collection frequency as pickups rise

Queenstown Commissioners on May 28 discussed mounting bulk-collection volumes that are increasing staff time and dumpster pickup costs, and asked Town Manager Amy Moore to review the town's collection guidelines before pursuing service changes.

At the meeting Ms. Moore said the amount of material placed out for bulk collection has been increasing, which is leading to more frequent dumpster pickups and higher expenses for the town. Commissioners discussed options including reducing the frequency to bi-weekly or monthly service or instituting a ticket system for bulk items. The commissioners directed staff to review current collection guidelines and return with recommendations rather than changing service immediately.

The discussion also touched on equipment needs: Ms. Moore reported multiple quotes to replace tires on a public-works pickup truck and noted that National Restorations submitted the low quote of $665 for four tires installed; the commissioners asked staff to confirm that all quotes were for tires with comparable mileage ratings before awarding a purchase.

Staffing concerns framed the collection discussion. Ms. Moore said only one public-works employee is scheduled for the next several weeks and recommended hiring temporary help or contracting out grass cutting to reduce strain on crew time.

During public comment, resident Sue Donaldson asked for an alternative approach to yard waste to lessen the burden on public works: "Is it possible to have yard waste collected by the current trash/recycling collection company as a separate day to take load off Public Works employees?" She also suggested a single designated town drop-off location for bulk items to speed collection.

Commissioners did not take immediate action; they asked staff to review comparable tire specs and current bulk-collection rules and return with options for a future meeting.
