The superintendent noted, "with the exemptions in place, we would have had about 22 3rd graders retained this year," and described plans to offer summer-school instruction and a state-provided reassessment for students needing a second chance.
Board members pressed for specifics about which subjects drove the risk (math and reading were noted) and how summer programs would target students who are on the cusp of proficiency so that fewer students ultimately are retained. Staff said the district will offer targeted summer school and reassessments supplied by the state; the exact form of that reassessment is not yet available.
The board approved the policy by unanimous voice vote. Members asked that future data presentations be restructured to focus more directly on benchmark growth and the specific concepts where students are struggling so board goals and meeting discussions are more clearly aligned.
The board will implement the policy as written and monitor summer-school participation and state reassessments when results are available.
