The Prince George's County House Delegation voted favorably on PGMC 10426 (HB1185), a Montgomery County–amended bill that extends appeal rights for Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission employees suspended for disciplinary reasons.
Legal counsel told the delegation that, as amended, the bill "establishes that an employee of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission who is suspended for disciplinary purposes may appeal the suspension to the Maryland Office of Administrative Hearings for a final decision." Previously, appeal rights applied only to employees who had been dismissed.
Delegates said labor partners who raised concerns had met with sponsors and were satisfied with the compromise language. A motion and second were recorded and a roll call was taken; the chair announced the bill passed favorably with the roll‑call total reported as 15 yes votes.
The bill's extension of appeal rights will require WSSC and affected labor organizations to coordinate on procedures for administrative hearings and on any implementing guidance.
