Board reviews policy updates to align with state requirements; some items to return July 21

The board reviewed a set of policy revisions recommended to align district rules with recent state legislation and guidance.
Dr. St. John said the proposed change to Policy 2070 on dissemination of materials responds to new state requirements to provide military representatives and certain federally designated youth organizations access similar to that provided to postsecondary institutions. "These revisions bring our policy into compliance with these new state requirements," he said.
The district also brought forward Policy 4050 (retention) and Policy 4055 (retaking high-school courses) after they were inadvertently omitted from a prior review cycle; recommended updates reflect recent changes to diploma requirements and clarify that when a course is repeated to replace a grade, the replacement course must be of equivalent academic rigor. A board member asked that the policy explicitly state that the original grade remains on the transcript even if it is excluded from GPA calculations; Dr. St. John said staff would add that language and bring the item back at the July 21 meeting.
Policy 4130 would clarify in-school interview procedures with the Department of Child Services or law enforcement, aligning guidance for administrators with statutory requirements. Staff said the recommended language is intended to ensure cooperation with governmental entities while providing clear guidance for administrators when these situations arise.
No policies were adopted at the meeting; staff will return revised language for board consideration on July 21.
