Volunteer fire department praised as council considers grant support

Nova Johns, president of the volunteer fire department and Ward 3 resident, addressed the council during public comment and thanked officials for retaining funds while the department worked to improve governance and capacity. "We have improved 5 over 500%, and that's just call volumes," Johns said, describing extended volunteer coverage and greater regional collaboration.
Council members responded with appreciation and noted staff had included a $100,000 line in the community development fund to help the department administer a federal grant. Staff projected the town would appropriate $46,000 to the department in FY27 (approximately $23,000 from operating and $23,000 from the fund allocation) and said staff will follow through on the grant appropriation as part of the FY27 budget process.
The council praised the department's progress and said it will continue discussions about how to support volunteer services while ensuring appropriate oversight and stewardship of town grants.
