Florence approves emergency water repair bills, pump rebuilds and hires part-time officer

The Florence mayor and board on Aug. 5 approved several public-works expenditures and in executive session approved a police hire.
The board unanimously approved payment of invoice M25017-F for $6,434.15 to address emergency repairs for a leaking gate valve at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street; city minutes say the repairs were deemed emergency work to provide water service to the community.
Separately, the board approved paying Cooper Electric Motor & Pump Sales & Service $12,243.07 to rebuild two submersible pumps for the lift station serving Jerry's Fish House on Highway 49. The minutes record the rebuild as a sole-source procurement and the motion carried unanimously.
City Engineer Tim Parker recommended and the board authorized Mayor Gunn to sign the Eagle Post Road Overlay Supplemental Agreement 01 (Project No. STP-7073-00(001)). The board also authorized signing a Thompson Brothers Drilling, Inc. stop-work order effective July 23, 2025.
On law-enforcement personnel, the board voted to enter executive session at 6:50 p.m. to discuss a Police Department personnel matter. In executive session, on Chief Brad Burns' recommendation the board voted to hire Hayden Lukens as a part-time police officer at $20.00 per hour starting Aug. 11, 2025, pending a successful background check and drug and alcohol testing; the vote was recorded as unanimous. The board returned to open session at 6:55 p.m. and adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
