Atlantic Beach to rely on Horry County patrols while new police chief is sworn in Dec. 8

Town Manager Adrian Jones told the Atlantic Beach Town Council on Nov. 18 that the town is relying on the Horry County Police Department to patrol Atlantic Beach while municipal policing is reconstituted and a new police chief is sworn in on Dec. 8.
"We are currently utilizing the Horry County Police Department to patrol our Town," Jones said, adding that the county will provide coverage "for the next 30 to 60 days" as the new chief and his staff are onboarded. Jones said the arrangement is effectively an hourly, net-30 agreement: the town pays officers for hours worked and is not bound to a long-term contract.
Jones gave an overview of coverage windows described to council: weekday coverage currently provided Monday–Thursday from about 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., with officers sometimes picking up later shifts between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.; Thursday through Saturday staffing includes similar evening and overnight options. Jones said he expects the incoming chief to bring personnel that will help restore a fuller municipal department.
When asked whether there is a signed contract, Jones characterized the current agreement as a flexible hourly arrangement rather than a long-term commitment. Council asked staff to provide additional cost and scheduling details; Jones said staff would supply that information ahead of future meetings.
