Committee forwards $7.8 million grant appropriation for bus barn rehab, training space

The finance committee on April 22 moved to forward to the full Belfast City Council a proposal to accept and appropriate $7,800,000 in federal grant funds for rehabilitation of the bus barn and an added workforce-training area.
An assistant city manager explained the grant is structured as an 80/20 federal-local split and said the state or main DOT will split the 20% local share with the city, leaving Bangor responsible for roughly 10 percent. "That means ... we're only on the hook for 10%," the assistant city manager said. Staff told the committee Bangor27s share is about $600,000 and that money has already been set aside in the capital budget.
Staff said the project is expected to take about 18 months and will include the rehabilitation described by the engineering director plus a small addition containing training space for drivers. The committee moved and seconded the motion to forward the appropriation to the full council; no council vote on the appropriation was recorded at the committee level.
If the full council approves the grant acceptance and appropriation, staff plan to schedule the project for design completion, procurement, and construction; the assistant city manager and engineering staff noted the grant conditions require timely council action.
