Adaptive Surf seeks permission for Oct. 11 'Wheel to Surf' event, donates beach mat and wheelchair

Luke Sharp, director of Adaptive Surf, told the council the group's program takes individuals with disabilities surfing and cycling, and that last year the organization took 60 participants surfing with about 100 volunteers. Sharp said Adaptive Surf donated beach matting and a beach wheelchair to Atlantic Beach, and that volunteers recently repaired an area of matting.
Sharp requested permission to hold the "Wheel to Surf" adaptive surfing event in Atlantic Beach on Oct. 11, with setup beginning at 6:30 a.m., the event starting at 8:30 a.m., and cleanup complete by early afternoon. He asked the council to have the town manager follow up to coordinate logistics; Councilwoman Carla Taylor said she would pass the request to the town manager and Mayor Pro Tem John David thanked Sharp for donations and assistance.
Sharp said the organization has additional mats available and would bring more if needed. Council members did not vote on a formal permit at the meeting but expressed support and directed staff follow-up.
