Shiawassee County commissioners approve $4.84 million in payments, renew multiple contracts and accept MDOC grant

The Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 11 approved payments and payroll totaling $4,837,403.09, renewed multiple service contracts and accepted an $80,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Chairman Gregory Brodeur convened the meeting at 5:00 p.m. in the Commissioner Chambers in Corunna. Commissioners recorded attendance and then approved the meeting agenda and the minutes of the Aug. 14, 2024 meeting.
The board voted to authorize warrants and pay the invoices and payroll listed on several Invoice Edit Reports and payroll batches, including Wire, ACH and EFT transactions, for a grand total of $4,837,403.09. The motion passed on a roll-call vote of six yeas, zero nays.
Following routine business, the board approved a proposal from Fleis & Vandenbrink to provide support to the Brownfield Redevelopment Board and assist with brownfield redevelopment planning; that motion carried unanimously. Doug Corwin, the county public defender, addressed the board to thank commissioners for renovations to the District Court building.
Other contract approvals and renewals included: - An agreement between Mr. Ogbonnaya and the Shiawassee County Health Department for Oct. 1, 2024 through Sept. 30, 2025 (authorized for the board chair to execute). - Renewal of a contract with the Shiawassee Regional Educational Service District for hearing and vision screening, not to exceed $15,747. - Two renewals with Shiawassee Health and Wellness for Social Work Services supporting the Perry Schools Child and Adolescent Health Program and the Durand School Wellness Program, each not to exceed $86,258. - Renewal of a contract with Convenient Urgent Care for sexually transmitted infection services. - A contract with PMC for temporary nursing services. All of these contract motions were recorded as approved by unanimous votes where roll-call details were listed as six yeas, zero nays.
On personnel and grant matters, the board approved the replacement of one correctional deputy, at a pay level not to exceed Step 3. The board also voted to accept an $80,000 grant award from the Michigan Department of Corrections for the Community Corrections Advisory Board. That grant acceptance passed 5–1, with Commissioner Garber recorded as voting no.
Chairman Brodeur also reported updates on the Land Bank, Community Mental Health matters and the closing of the Fidler Green facility, noting the Veteran’s Office assisted the last resident there. County Coordinator Dr. Boggs briefed the board on a potential Community Mental Health grant, plans to install a camera in the Board Chambers and the start of the 2025 budget process.
During public comment, Jessica Maurer of Owosso spoke on veteran services. The board adjourned at 5:33 p.m.
