Locust Valley voters reject $100.25M school budget; transportation and library measures pass; new trustee sworn in

Voters in the Locust Valley Central School District on May 19 rejected Proposition 1, the district'wide budget for 2026–27 of $100,251,364, while approving Proposition 2 (transportation) and Proposition 3 (a library tax levy).
At the board'meeting that evening, the official vote reader Allison read the district tallies by election district and then the totals. She reported that Proposition 1 drew 765 yes votes and 850 no votes, and stated, "The proposition will fail." For Proposition 2, Allison reported a total of 981 yes votes and 613 no votes and said that the proposition "will pass." She also read results for Proposition 3, the Locust Valley Public Library tax levy for 2026–27 in the amount of $1,759,662, reporting 424 yes votes and 240 no votes in the library service area; she said that proposition passed.
The board then certified the results and signed a certificate of declaration referencing paragraph 7(c) of Section 2034 of the New York Education Law as the legal basis for the board of canvas. Allison read the certificate and the list of board officers who signed the document.
All three open board seats were also called. Allison read the tallies for each candidate by district and total votes: Holly Gaddi Estevez (1,060 total votes), Brian Keatney (1,078 total votes) and Paul Chiricella (1,047 total votes). Allison noted that multiple write-in candidates together did not affect the outcome. The board voted to accept the vote and election results; the motion carried unanimously.
Following certification, the board administered the oath of office to the trustee who will fill the immediate vacancy. Brian Keegany repeated the oath, swearing to "support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the members of the board of education, Locust Valley Central School District," for the term commencing May 19, 2026 and expiring June 30, 2026.
The board noted that additional details about an automatic revote process will be provided by the board and administration in the coming days. The meeting adjourned after brief closing remarks and thanks to election workers and staff.
