Aurora to hire census workers to recapture $4.3M annually; mayor stresses bike and e-scooter safety

Mayor John Lash said Aurora will hire temporary census workers this summer to support a September recount of housing added since 2020, and said the effort is aimed at regaining federal funds the city lost after the 2020 undercount.
"These jobs pay $21 to $24 an hour," Lash said, and he described the recount as focused on new construction occupied since 2020. He said the city has been losing about $4,300,000 per year because the 2020 count was not correct and urged residents to assist with the upcoming effort.
Lash also said his summer agenda will include a focus on bike and pedestrian safety. He cited incidents in which young children on e-scooters were hit and said the city will work to educate parents and enforce rules. "The police will confiscate [small motorized vehicles] ... because the people that do not have a driver's license [are] running around at 30, 40 miles an hour," he said.
The mayor said the city is hiring for the census and will emphasize outreach to ensure new housing is counted so Aurora can regain federal funds.
