Mayor John Lash described a proposed ethics ordinance intended to limit potential conflicts of interest by capping campaign donations from companies that do business with the city.
Lash said the measure would prohibit companies seeking city contracts or incentives from giving more than $1,500 to a city elected official’s campaign. "If you as a company are seeking to do business with the city, or have done business with the city, then you are limited to donating $1,500 to an elected official's campaign," he said, adding that the restriction would apply to aldermen and the mayor but not to state representatives, county board members or school board members.
The mayor said an effort to put the proposal on the ballot showed strong public support. "Overwhelming enthusiasm," he said, and described only a few pockets of resistance among petition signers.
Lash framed the ordinance as a measure to restore public trust and reduce the appearance that donations buy preferential treatment in procurement or RFP processes.
