Sandra Hernandez presented the School Health Advisory Committee's annual report and the district's triennial wellness assessment at the May 18 meeting.
Hernandez said the district used the WellSAT electronic assessment and scored in the "eighties and nineties," noting the results identify areas for improvement. "One of the things that stepped out from that evaluation is the need to develop a written PE curriculum for grades K to 12 aligned to national and state standards," Hernandez said. The SHAC also recommended developing and implementing a structured school-recess plan, integrating nutrition education into non-health subjects and regulating food and beverages served at elementary-school celebrations.
Hernandez described SHAC membership requirements, meeting-frequency rules and the triennial evaluation process required by state law. She said the committee will review parent survey feedback and use findings to draft a three-year wellness-plan implementation schedule; the committee was scheduled to reconvene the following day to finalize work.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about the recess recommendation and its expected timeline. A board member noted recent research supporting more frequent physical breaks for younger students; Hernandez said the recommendation envisions a monitored, structured recess with activities that develop fine-motor and physical skills. Administration said the district posts SHAC minutes and required documents online.
The report does not adopt specific new policy at this meeting; it records SHAC findings and proposes next steps for the district to incorporate into its wellness policy.
The board took no formal vote on the recommendations at this meeting; SHAC materials will return as implementation items and policy updates when drafted.
