Edmore president questions DDA rent hike for Arts Council, urges negotiation

Village President Chet Guild told the council Dec. 8 he is concerned about a Downtown Development Authority decision to raise the Arts Council’s basement rent from $500 to $750 per month and urged the council to consider intervening or encouraging negotiation between the parties.
"He doesn’t understand how the DDA can justify raising the rent $250 a month for a basement with no electricity and no lights," Guild said, noting he would "hate for them to have to leave and have nowhere to go and the DDA loses money." Manager Mark Borden said the increase was proposed and voted on at the end of the DDA meeting, that the Arts Council member who sits on the DDA did not vote, and that the member did not have time to react before the meeting ended. Council discussion concluded with agreement that the increase should not be $250 and Borden was asked to raise the matter at the DDA’s January meeting to seek negotiation between the DDA and the Arts Council.
No formal council action was recorded to change the DDA decision at this meeting; the council asked staff to discuss the matter with the DDA and pursue a negotiated outcome.
