Tensas Parish School Board keeps officers, awards four-year farm lease and recognizes Students of the Year

The Tensas Parish School Board on Jan. 9 retained its 2025 officers, assigned members to a finance committee and approved a four-year agricultural lease for district property, among several routine actions taken at a regular meeting in St. Joseph.
John Turner was confirmed as board president and Esaw Turner as vice president after a motion by Annice Miller, seconded by Jennifer Burnside. President Turner then named himself, Miller and George Matthews to the Finance Committee, with Joseph Tarver designated as an alternate; the committee will meet at 1 p.m. at the Central Office on the Wednesday before regular board meetings.
On a motion by Annice Miller, seconded by George Matthews, the board awarded a lease covering 169.76 acres of district agricultural property to Y&L Farms, represented in the record by Arch Yerger and Nathan Lee. The lease runs Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2028, at $163.08 per acre, for an annual total of $27,684.46. The motion passed.
The board also approved routine business items, including the minutes of the Dec. 12, 2024 meeting (motion by John Turner, seconded by Annice Miller), receipt of the November financial statement and budget-to-actual update (motion by George Matthews, seconded by Jennifer Burnside), and the Annual Sexual Harassment Report for calendar year 2024 (motion by John Turner, seconded by George Matthews).
John Turner moved, and Annice Miller seconded, approval of the School Board Member Training Resolution for 2024 and a resolution proclaiming January as "School Board Recognition Month." Both motions passed.
The board recognized the Tensas Parish School District 2024–2025 Students of the Year: Madison Bass (Tensas High School), Jonesia Crockett (Tensas Jr. High School) and Jayda Lynch (Tensas Elementary School). Superintendent Joyce M. Russ thanked attendees and congratulated the award recipients, saying, "Thank you for coming tonight. I appreciate the support," and added that "schools and offices will be closed tomorrow due to the weather."
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. The minutes were signed by John Turner, President, and Joyce M. Russ, Superintendent.
