Elberta Village Council approves audit, multiple contracts and supports Betsie Valley Trail extension

ELBERTA, Mich. — The Elberta Village Council on April 16 approved a slate of routine financial items and contracts and voted to send a letter to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources supporting extension of the Betsie Valley Trail to Elberta Beach.
The council unanimously approved the FY2026 check register covering March 12–April 9, 2026, totaling $38,422.59, and payroll for March 13–April 9 totaling $19,667.00. Clerk Rachel Perkins presented the registers and the motions to approve were carried by roll-call vote with all members voting aye.
Council members approved an audit engagement with Gabridge & Company for the fiscal year ending Feb. 28, 2026, not to exceed $10,300, and authorized execution of the engagement letter. The motion was made by Radionoff T. and seconded by Fiebing; the roll-call vote was unanimous.
The council also approved several contracts and program items: an agreement with Frankfort Area Fire & Emergency Services effective July 1, 2026; an independent contractor agreement with Jimmy Baldwin to provide code enforcement services (to be amended to reflect a budgeted amount of $3,500); the 2026 Elberta Community Farmer’s Market contract; a facility rental contract; a services contract with Kerby’s Backhoe; and an amended rental agreement for the Elberta Life Saving Station that allows an outside vendor if approved by council. Each motion passed unanimously as recorded in the minutes.
A request to approve Meggison Tents & Events to provide outside tents for the U.S. Life Saving Station event on June 20, 2026 was approved for that date only. A proposal for a website redesign with ADA compliance was moved to be tabled for further review and the council voted to table it.
Council members noted correspondence including a community garage sale notice (approved to post on the village website), a written and verbal Frankfort Fire & Rescue report from Chief Cederholm, and notice from the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation regarding the 2026 Edna endowment. Multiple committees and staff provided written or verbal reports, including representatives for the Betsie Valley Trail and the Planning Commission.
The meeting included brief and extended public comment periods; the minutes record that public comment was taken but do not include speakers’ statements. The meeting adjourned at 8:14 p.m. The council announced the village spring cleanup for May 16, 2026, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
