Silvis council approves consent agenda; clerk and staff highlight local events and grant

The Silvis City Council approved its consent agenda and heard staff updates and community announcements at its Sept. 3 meeting.
Alderman Craig Pirmann moved to establish the consent agenda; Alderman Joshua Dyer seconded and the motion passed 8–0. Alderman Rick Lohse then moved to approve the consent agenda dated Aug. 20, 2024; Alderman Craig Pirmann seconded and the council approved that motion 8–0.
City Clerk Amy Malmstrom told the council she had distributed the Lauterbach and Ancel Glink bills and warned that SoundCloud attachments may automatically download for users who lack a player. She also reported that a grant for lights at the Hero Street pavilion reduced the local share from $3,200 to $997.50: “Hero Street the pavilion we did get the grant for the lights, that went from $3200 down to $997.50,” Malmstrom said.
Clerks and staff announced upcoming community events: a Railroad "Tractors and Trains" event set for Oct. 18–19 and a Hispanic Heritage celebration scheduled for Sept. 14 that the city is partnering on with the library. Alderwoman Chrissy Winters and Alderman Bob Cervantes urged volunteers to sign up for setup and garbage collection.
Police Chief VanKlaverren announced a new community service officer (CSO) who will start Sept. 16. Mayor Matt Carter reported on a damaged baggage car at Railway Park that will need rebuilding and said he had received a lumber donation to help with reconstruction: “It is going to have to be completely rebuilt, and I did receive a lumber donation,” Carter said.
