Silvis council approves 2025 meeting schedule; clerk praises Angel Tree, inspections report on acquired property

The Silvis City Council unanimously approved its Committee and City Council meeting schedule for calendar year 2025 and approved the meeting's consent agenda during its Jan. 7 session.
Alderman Rick Lohse moved to approve the schedule; the motion, seconded by Alderman Craig Pirmann, passed 8-0. Earlier, Alderman Joshua Dyer moved to establish the consent agenda as read and Alderman Doug Greer moved to approve the consent agenda dated Nov. 6, 2024; both motions passed on unanimous voice votes.
City Clerk Amy Malmstrom reported that the Angel Tree program "was a big success" and thanked everyone involved. Alderwoman Chrissy Winters announced a March 7 euchre tournament at Avenue Tap and requested volunteers and donations.
During staff reports, Inspections Department representative Tom said the city has acquired 214 Hero St., that additional violations had been issued to the property and to the occupant in Davenport, and that staff would need assistance from City Attorney Roger to move forward with eviction proceedings. Tom said junk had accumulated again at the property; Alderman Craig Pirmann asked whether ordinances are being enforced citywide, and Tom responded that enforcement is carried out across the city. Chief VanKlaverren of the police department told the council the department needs to "sit down and make a calculated plan, implement it and make sure we have our ducks in a row." Public Works & Parks (Joe) had no report.
