Waterford library seeks $45,000 pickup locker, schedules HVAC hookup and community room renovation

Library Director Julie Schaefer told the Waterford Township Library Advisory Committee on March 25 that staff have applied for a $45,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan to fund an outdoor locker that would allow patrons to pick up holds when the building is closed. The locker would be installed outside the library and used for after-hours holds pickup if the grant is awarded.
Schiaefer said the library is the last township building to be connected to the township HVAC control center; Waterford DPW presented that plan to the Township Board on March 9. Once the HVAC-control connection is complete, the library will replace a rooftop air handler that the director described as needed to modernize building systems. A final pre-construction meeting for a Community Room renovation is scheduled for the coming Friday, and staff expect renovation work to begin after Easter.
The library also plans to expand outreach. A new Chevy Equinox intended for home delivery is expected to be delivered soon; it will initially carry the library logo and later receive specialty wrapping. Schaefer reported 19 applications for the Outreach Librarian position and said eight candidates will be interviewed next week, with the first-round interviews at town hall and a second round at the library.
Scholastic and community programs were also discussed: a Weiss Financial Ratings database is available to staff and will be promoted after staff training, the Southeast Michigan Library Hop will run in April with participation from 21 libraries, and the Mid-Michigan TLN consortium is planning a summer program for participating libraries. Schaefer said the new library logo—designed by Oakland University students—launched March 16 and that staff have begun purchasing items with the new branding.
The committee voted unanimously to accept the director’s report and to note the facility and program plans for follow-up and implementation.
