District outlines plan to expand Amplify CKLA with $850,000 Section 35m grant

The presenter said the district qualified for a Section 35m grant that brought in more than $850,000 in grant funds specifically for early literacy resources. The district selected Amplify CKLA (3rd edition) from the state's ranked list of evidence-based tier-1 literacy curricula; the presenter said Amplify CKLA received a 98% consensus score in the state's review process and matched requirements tied to the K-12 literacy and dyslexia law.
Staff described the pilot: Amplify coaches visited every elementary building where pilot teachers had begun implementation in October; pilot classrooms were showing strong student engagement and teacher buy-in. The presenter described features of the program, including unified instruction across K-5, phonics and comprehension integration, and technology components; he noted staff are continuing professional development to support teachers.
Regarding results, the presenter said fall and winter NWEA (NWA) data give only an early snapshot because implementation started later in the school year; more telling spring and subsequent-year results are expected, and he said the district hopes to report improvement by the 2027 assessment cycle.
The presenter emphasized that the instructional-material purchases for full implementation would be paid with grant funds, not the general fund. Board members asked about measurable data and timelines; staff said they will present spring assessment comparisons and more detailed expenditure figures at a future meeting.
