Commissioners approve dozens of line‑item grants to local nonprofits and towns during budget hearing

Lander County commissioners approved a slate of general‑fund grant requests during the March 25 budget hearing, voting on each line item after brief presentations from community groups.

The board approved the following among other awards: $6,200 to Agape Hospice & Palliative Care to help pay professional liability insurance and state licensing; a $6,000 operating grant and a $17,000 weed‑control grant to the county conservation district; $5,000 to Nevada Outdoor Schools to support local youth programming and transportation; and grants to the towns of Kingston and Battle Mountain for pavilion upgrades, parks equipment and event support. During multiple presentations, applicants described how county funds are combined with other grants, donated food and volunteer labor to run recurring programs.

Commissioners asked applicants about reporting and transparency. Several speakers emphasized the need for consistent reporting and receipts; staff reminded grantees that no payments are typically released until required reporting and receipts are submitted. Commissioners also discussed a staff proposal to create a dedicated grant fund seeded from principal that would preserve principal and spend only interest for recurring grants; staff was asked to return with implementation options and proposed policy language prior to final budget adoption.

The board took roll call voice votes for each grant. Where the record shows only voice votes, motions passed with the standard unanimous ‘ayes’ called at the hearing.
