City will apply for $50,000 Wood County grant to advance planned subdivision near Griffith and 16th

The Finance & Property Committee authorized staff to apply for a $50,000 Wood County economic development grant to assist with subdivision planning at the northwest corner of Griffith Avenue and 16th Street.
Kyle Kearns, Director of Community Development, said the city has prepared a concept plan for the roughly 40-acre parcel and intends to use funding to analyze costs for extending utilities, roads and potential phased development. "We're looking at what it would cost to extend utilities to serve the 40 acre parcel, extend roads, and so forth," Kearns said.
Kearns told the committee the county’s seed fund is flexible — past awards have funded park bathrooms and downtown planning — and that Jason at the county encouraged the city to apply even though detailed cost estimates were not yet complete. Jeff Penskover noted the application deadline is this Friday, July 10, and recommended granting staff permission to apply. The committee approved the motion 3–0.
Kearns said if the city is awarded funds staff would return to the Common Council for final approval before any contracts are signed and would coordinate with the engineering department to produce cost estimates, phased options and potential additional funding through WEDA loans or a residential TIF district.
The committee approved the application and instructed staff to bring firm cost and funding plans to future finance and council meetings if the grant is awarded.
