Fire chief reports house fire and injured visiting firefighter; asks council for EMS responder discussions

Fire Chief Cassidy reported to the council that the department responded to a residential blaze on 17th Street last week and that a Hampton firefighter who assisted suffered a serious ankle injury after stepping in a hole.
"We did have a fire on 17th Street last week. We did have an injury with a Hampton Fire Fighter who stepped in a hole and injured his ankle pretty bad," Chief Cassidy said. He thanked Public Works for helping cut a fence to gain access to the property and requested time with one or two aldermen at a time to discuss transitioning to an EMS responder system.
The report was delivered during the Dec. 17 regular meeting as part of staff reports; no formal council action or vote was taken on the EMS responder request during the meeting. Police and public works provided brief updates: Police Chief VanKlaverren reported full staffing and that a vicious dog had been removed from the city; Public Works Director Joe said crews used about 150 tons of salt during a recent ice event and that supplies are sufficient.
