Silvis council approves internet upgrades for fire stations, final sidewalk payment and 2025 tax levy; smoke shop resolution passes

The Silvis City Council approved multiple operational and budget items during its Dec. 17 regular meeting, including internet service for both fire stations, final sidewalk payments and the city's 2025 tax levy.

Alderman Craig Pirmann moved to approve a Platinum internet lease for both fire stations at $161.41 per month for 36 months; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with five yes, zero no and one abstention. The council also approved a separate fiber service contract with Geneseo Communications at a cost not to exceed $1,000 per month for both stations; that vote was unanimous.

The council approved Pay Estimate #2 Final to Five Cities for sidewalk work on 1st Avenue not to exceed $128,903.85 after a motion by Alderman Joshua Dyer. The vote on the pay estimate was 6-0 in favor. Alderwoman Chrissy Winters moved to approve Ordinance 2024-29, the tax levy ordinance, which the council adopted by a 6-0 roll-call vote. The council also approved Resolution 2024-30R, authorizing No More Butts Smoke Shop, by a unanimous vote.

Taken together, the votes put several operational upgrades and a fiscal measure into effect. The Platinum lease vote recorded one abstention (Alderman Joshua Dyer); all other recorded motions in the regular meeting passed on unanimous roll-call votes among members present.

The council handled routine procedural steps, including establishing the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, and then moved through the listed items. No amendments to the approved motions were recorded during the meeting. The council adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
