Mayfield Board recognizes students, staff and welcomes new band director

At its Feb. 25 meeting the Mayfield Board of Education set aside time to recognize students, staff and a newly hired band director.
Teachers and staff presented student‑of‑the‑month awards: Hannah Grillo introduced Elena Henrich of Atlanta Elementary, calling her “kind, respectful, and always ready to lend a healthy hand to classmates and teachers alike.” Other students recognized included Alastair Ewing and Simon Coop for academic effort, leadership and extracurricular participation. The board also screened a short district video highlighting the district theme and how students "show up" for school.
The board honored Nikki DiGironimo, an administrative assistant described by the presenter as warm, organized and a welcoming daily presence at Landry Elementary: “She is often the first smile a child sees in the morning and the reassuring presence they rely on throughout the day,” the presenter said. Colleagues also recognized a longtime teacher known in the meeting as “Missy” for 34 years of classroom service ahead of her retirement.
Board members introduced Darren Maskewicz as the new Mayfield Middle School band director and welcomed his family to the meeting. The superintendent’s team also highlighted district academic and athletic achievements, including three National Merit finalists and multiple state qualifiers in athletics and academic competitions.
The recognitions took place at the start of the public meeting and set a community tone before the board moved into routine business.
