Trappe council backs letter supporting Talbot County accommodations tax increase
Summary
The Trappe Town Council voted to send a letter endorsing Talbot County’s proposed increase in the accommodations tax from 4% to 6%. The motion passed 4–0 with one abstention and followed a presentation from a county representative.
Cassandra Vanhooser, representing Talbot County, asked the Trappe Town Council on Dec. 4 to support the county’s proposed increase in the accommodations tax from 4% to 6% and provided the council with a copy of the county code governing the tax.
Commissioner Water Chase moved that the town send a letter of support for the proposed tax increase; Commissioner Rose Potter seconded. Commissioner Jeremy Newnam abstained. Commissioners Michael Sullivan, President Schmidt and Potter voted in favor, and the motion carried.
Vanhooser explained the county currently collects the tax and remits proceeds to towns after a 5% service fee; council discussion did not record alternative proposals. The council did not receive public comment on the matter during the hearing.
The council’s action is limited to sending a letter of support; any change to the county tax rate would be adopted by the Talbot County Council.
