Council recognized Melrose Plaza on May 18 after the project won a Virginia Economic Developers Association Community Economic Development Award at a statewide conference. Donna Davis and city staff described Melrose Plaza as a multiuse community hub anchored by Virginia's first adult high school at the site, providing education, health care, food access and financial resources.
City and project representatives said the development involved approximately $34 million in investment and that Melrose Plaza has already helped reduce food access barriers for thousands of nearby residents and expand adult-education opportunities. Councilmembers congratulated the project team and encouraged residents to visit the site and support its businesses and services.
Next steps: Melrose Plaza staff said the center will celebrate its first anniversary in July and continue outreach to bring additional programs to the community.
