Trappe will ask MDE for approval to accept Lakeside treated effluent into town lagoon

Trappe — The Trappe Town Council voted Aug. 7 to ask the Maryland Department of the Environment to permit Lakeside Wastewater Treatment Plant to send treated effluent to Trappe’s lagoon.
Town Attorney Lyndsey Ryan explained that Lakeside is in its start-up phase and currently cannot spray discharge; the developer has been trucking treated effluent to Hurlock for further processing. Ryan said the amount Lakeside seeks to send is less than the permitted cap of 30,000 gallons per day that Lakeside may send to Trappe.
Commissioner Michael Sullivan moved that the town send a letter to MDE requesting approval to accept Lakeside’s treated effluent either directly into Trappe’s lagoon or through Lakeside’s pumping station, which would allow Trappe to manage incoming flow. Commissioner Walter Chase seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Engineering staff and Superintendent Steve Callahan had discussed options with GMB and operations staff, and council directed staff to continue consultations with GMB and USDA as needed to ensure regulatory compliance and operational safety.
The council did not set a final operational plan for acceptance; it authorized only the request to MDE and additional consultations.
