University Park adopts 'No Mow April' resolution to support pollinators, council asks to preserve mowing near paths

The University Park Mayor and Common Council adopted Resolution 26-R-04 on March 23, 2026, designating April as No Mow April to encourage residents to voluntarily delay lawn mowing and support pollinator-friendly habitat during a critical emergence period. Councilmember Grant Godfrey read the resolution and Councilmember Mary Gathercole raised a public-health caveat asking that mowing continue around park paths and town hall because of tick populations.
Council adopted the resolution by unanimous vote. Councilmembers agreed that while resident participation should be voluntary to support pollinators, staff should clearly identify and continue routine mowing around high-traffic walking paths and the town hall to reduce tick exposure.
The resolution is intended as a voluntary, community-engagement measure rather than a regulatory prohibition on mowing. Public Works staff will be asked to publicize guidance on which town-maintained areas will remain mowed and any recommended practices for residents who wish to participate in No Mow April.
