Walkersville schedules Discovery Water Main work and a weeklong railroad closure; automated meter portal goes live

The town's public works director told commissioners that the Discovery Water Main Project is moving to preconstruction: a contractor meeting is scheduled for March 4 and crews hope to begin water-main work in mid‑March, weather permitting. The project will start near Imagination Court, proceed south across Stauffer Road and end at Discovery Boulevard and Inspiration Avenue.

Public works also said a contractor working on the Walkersville railroad corridor will require a complete roadway closure at the railroad crossing on Pennsylvania Avenue, with work currently scheduled for March 3–7; staff urged the contractor to post message boards and detour information one week in advance and to notify impacted businesses, the school board and emergency services.

The director also announced the automated meter-reading customer portal is live for residents who have the new meters and advised that residents without the new meters can schedule an appointment for a meter change. "Residents that have a census meter can now go to the town website," the director said; staff noted that the town has a limited number of meters available in this budget year and asked residents to call town hall for guidance.

Commissioners also approved temporary road closures for the Summer Solstice race on June 14 (7:30 p.m. start) and voted to move ahead with routine maintenance work such as Green Street storm-drain repairs. The board instructed staff to coordinate closures with county bus scheduling to reduce community disruption.

Next steps: staff will confirm final construction timing with Mid Atlantic and post advanced notice and detour plans for the scheduled railroad closure.
