Chesapeake City Council on Oct. 15 approved a slate of annual community events and authorized hiring a part-time maintenance worker.
In a series of routine motions, the council approved the second annual Lighted Boat Parade, the New Year’s Day 5K, the Pet Parade near Pell Gardens, and the Parade of Horses and Christmas Market. Council also passed Resolution 2024-007 to permit alcohol at the Christmas Market and Parade of Horses. Each motion was made and seconded and the minutes record ‘‘All in favor, motion carried.’’
The council approved hiring Adam Streets at $15.00 per hour for 20 hours a week to fill an additional part-time maintenance position recommended by the personnel committee. Town Manager Rob Bernstine said staff will work out a schedule with existing maintenance personnel.
Why it matters: The approved events are recurring attractions for tourism and local businesses; the alcohol resolution creates an exception for the Christmas Market subject to event conditions and any required CCDCA approvals for activities in Pell Gardens.
Council members noted procedural requirements: events that use Pell Gardens need CCDCA approval, and organizers must return with any required resolutions if alcohol will be served. The minutes record no roll-call tallies, only unanimous affirmation for the motions.
What’s next: Event organizers and staff will complete any required CCDCA permissions and submit necessary documentation. The new maintenance hire will be scheduled by the town manager.
