Traffic engineer outlines speed‑hump and crosswalk recommendations across Cheverly wards

Jack Good, the town traffic engineer, told the mayor and council that he had reviewed resident submissions and a spreadsheet of traffic hotspots and made ward‑specific safety recommendations including temporary speed humps, requests to study permanent traffic calming, raised crosswalks and targeted enforcement.

For Ward 1 Good recommended two permanent speed humps on Lake Avenue between Kilmer and Forest (with a temporary hump already in place), raised crosswalk consideration at Lombard and Cheverly Avenue, and periodic police or automated enforcement where speed limits permit. In Ward 3 he highlighted pedestrian safety issues on 62nd Avenue and the need to evaluate sidewalk installation within existing right‑of‑way. For Ward 4 he recommended continued coordination with SHA District 3 on signal timing, better intersection lighting and possible red‑light countermeasures at Columbia Park Road and Route 50.

Council discussed prioritization and staff said they will work with Public Works, police and the traffic engineer to turn the recommendations into a strategic plan that lists high‑priority items for potential implementation this fiscal year. The police chief said a targeted enforcement campaign in partnership with Prince George’s County is planned for Oct.12–19 that will focus on several of the listed locations, and the chief noted a red‑light enforcement work order for Columbia Park Road & Route 50 was pending his review.

Next steps: staff to prepare a strategic implementation plan, coordinate with county and SHA where required, and return with a recommended schedule and budget implications; no vote was taken on specific engineering projects at this meeting.
