Robbins mayor outlines MWRD work, demolition plans and street resurfacing; public works reports fuel vendor and salt-barn prep

Mayor Darren E. Bryant updated the Village of Robbins council Sept. 13 on several near-term infrastructure projects, including Metropolitan Water Reclamation District work, an upcoming demolition program and street resurfacing.
Bryant said the MWRD will fence the work area at 135th Street and Claire Boulevard by the end of the month and that tree clearing is expected to start the first week of October. "We will be fencing off [the area] at 135th & Claire by the end of the month," he told the board, and added that the village has applied for a home accessibility grant that could provide up to $45,000 to qualifying residents.
He also announced a heavy demolition program slated to begin in spring 2023 north of 135th Street. Street resurfacing is scheduled to begin the following week on McBreen, Trumbull and Homan, with Finley, Glenn, Wayman, Richardson and Lincoln Lane slated for spring work.
Public Works reported several operational updates: a selected diesel and gasoline vendor will deliver fuel to village vehicles to reduce costs; street-sign installation has begun; tree trimming will continue through November; and preparations for a new salt barn have started. Public Works also provided quotes for garage-door openers for municipal garages and said it plans to hire additional staff by mid-October.
Public safety updates were delivered during standing committee reports. DC Malley of the Fire Department reported 132 incidents in August and introduced two new hires, Brendan Shanahan and Kevin Morrin. "The ambulance should be decaled by next week," DC Malley told the council. Chief Sheppard reported 1,013 incidents for August in his written report, outlined hiring activity and referenced a memorandum of understanding with the Cook County Sheriff's Department to access resources when needed. He also noted the availability of a scent kit to assist in locating missing persons.
Trustees and residents raised related concerns: Trustee Gregory N. Jackson flagged truck parking on 139th Street and said signs have been ordered and an ordinance will follow; several public commenters asked about the condition of an alley on 135th Street and requested speed signs on Kildaire/Kolin to address racing.
The council recessed into closed session later in the meeting and reconvened before adjourning at 9:25 p.m.
