Public commenter urges stronger inventory controls for school band instruments

During public comments at the May 21 meeting of the Beaufort County Board of Education finance committee, a resident identified as Miller urged the district to tighten controls for school band instruments.
Miller said that until about two years ago there was little or no system-wide control and urged a protocol where band directors complete inventories at the beginning and end of each school year, with interim audits by the district. Miller praised the district’s director of fine arts, Brenner, for trying to implement a better process and said Brenner wrote a manual intended to standardize procedures.
Chair acknowledged the comment and indicated the inventory concern would be raised with the operations committee for follow-up. The committee did not take formal action on the request during the meeting.
