Cabot School Board approves 2024–25 budget, Chromebook sale and joint-use agreements; upholds three expulsions

The Cabot School Board on Sept. 17 unanimously approved several administrative and policy items, including the district’s 2024–25 budget and a resolution to allow graduating seniors to purchase their district-issued Chromebooks for $10.
The board voted 7–0 to adopt the 2024–25 budget. The motion to approve the budget was made by Corey Williams and seconded by James Hertzog. Superintendent Dr. Tony Thurman presented the budget, which he said is roughly 80% staffing costs. District staff member Tina Wiley told the board the district’s tax assessment rose by 1.28% while average nearby districts saw larger increases, and that declining average daily membership reduced state funding despite a higher per-student state amount.
The board also voted 7–0 to approve a resolution allowing Cabot High School seniors graduating in May 2025 to purchase their Chromebooks for $10 (motion by Sarah Owen, second by Pam Clem). The devices will be removed from district inventory if the sale occurs.
Several administrative items were approved by unanimous vote: updated employee disclosures (motion by Sarah Owen, second by James Hertzog), five-year joint-use agreements with Cabot Parks and Recreation, First Baptist Church and Mt. Carmel Baptist Church (motion by Marvin Jones, second by James Hertzog), and routine personnel recommendations (motion by Sarah Owen, second by Kevin Tipton).
On discipline matters, the board upheld expulsions recommended by administration for students identified in the record as 6016 and 7086 (motions and seconds recorded in meeting minutes). Representatives for student 3066 requested a closed appeal hearing; after hearing statements the board moved into executive session, reconvened and voted to expel student 3066 for the remainder of the 2024–25 school year. All expulsions were upheld by 7–0 votes.
No public comment was offered at the meeting. The board adjourned at 10:01 p.m.
