Slinger Police Commission directs background checks for Police Chief candidates after closed session

The Village of Slinger Police Commission met Sept. 23, 2024, and after holding a closed session authorized under Wisconsin Statute 19.85(1) instructed staff to begin background checks for selected Police Chief candidates.
Chairperson Ken Leeson called the meeting to order at 3:15 p.m. at 300 Slinger Road. Vice-Chairperson Rob Schmid, commission members Ken Vlasak, John Dukelow and Craig Wolf were present; Village Administrator Margaret Wilber attended as staff.
Commission member Ken Vlasak moved to approve the minutes from the Sept. 19, 2024, Police Commission meeting; Vice-Chairperson Rob Schmid seconded and the motion carried.
The commission then voted to enter closed session at 3:17 p.m. "to consider employment, promotion, or performance evaluation data of any employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility (Police Chief Candidate discussion)," citing Wisconsin Statute 19.85(1). John Dukelow moved to go into closed session and Craig Wolf seconded; a roll call vote was recorded with Chairperson Ken Leeson, Vice-Chairperson Rob Schmid, Ken Vlasak, John Dukelow and Craig Wolf voting in favor.
The commission returned to open session at 4:00 p.m. on a motion by Craig Wolf, seconded by John Dukelow; the roll call vote was unanimous. After returning to open session, Commission member John Dukelow moved, and Ken Vlasak seconded, to direct staff to begin the background process for the selected candidates. The motion carried. The commission requested that the results be presented at the next meeting, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.
Vice-Chairperson Rob Schmid moved to adjourn at 4:07 p.m.; John Dukelow seconded and the motion carried.
The meeting record does not specify vote tallies for the motions to approve the Sept. 19 minutes, to direct staff to begin background checks, or to adjourn beyond the notation that those motions "carried."
