Commission approves replacement of seven City Hall heat pumps

The City Commission authorized replacement of seven heat pumps at City Hall after a staff presentation explaining the need to remove aging units originally installed during a 2004 remodel.
"Before you for your consideration this evening is a replacement of 7 heat pumps at City Hall here," Chad Griffin told commissioners, adding that the building contains 37 heat pumps in total and the seven to be replaced are about 22 years old. Griffin said Trane will perform the work and integrate the new units with the building-management system.
Commissioners pressed staff about whether to replace additional units now to capture potential cost savings, noting prior replacements in 2022 and warranty coverage on some newer units. Griffin said the city is replacing units incrementally to avoid unnecessary replacements of still-serviceable equipment and to limit operational disruption.
Commissioner Moseley moved to approve authorization for the replacement work; Commissioner Tyson supported the motion and the commission approved it by voice vote.
Staff said old units will be removed and recycled as part of the contractors work and that the replacements are expected to be staged to minimize impact on City Hall operations.
