Fire chief reports no casualties in second quarter; department outlines mutual-aid and training activity

The Kentwood Fire Chief presented the department027s second-quarter report to the City Commission, summarizing incident totals, mutual-aid activity, inspection and plan-review counts, and training efforts.
"We don't have any casualties to report for the 3 months," the chief said, emphasizing that while the department responded to a range of fires and medical calls, no civilian or fire-service injuries were reported. The chief provided a numerical breakdown (45 fires; 959 EMS calls; 82 hazardous situations) and noted mutual-aid responses to nearby jurisdictions including Walker and Grand Rapids.
The chief also described preventative and training work: smoke-detector installations provided through a state program, plan-review and inspection counts year-to-date, and a regional NFPA live-fire certification class hosted at the department's training center with state fireworks funds supporting the effort.
Commissioners asked whether dumpster and trash fires were increasing; the chief said such incidents often occur during long, dry spells and are frequently discovered after the fact. After discussion, Commissioner Conklin moved to receive and file the report; Commissioner Moore supported the motion and the commission approved it by voice vote.
The department reported no further operational changes at the meeting; staff noted continued collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions for mutual aid and regional training opportunities.
