Section 5 approves $10,000 donation to Rosemary Hills Elementary outdoor classroom contingent on MCPS approval

At the June 10 meeting, Katey Vale, a member of the Rosemary Hills Elementary School (RHES) PTA and former Section 3 councilmember, asked municipalities serving RHES for contributions to renovate the school's outdoor classroom.
Vale said Section 3 has committed $13,000, the Town of Chevy Chase plans to commit $10,000, and the PTA can contribute up to $5,000; municipal contributions would be contingent on MCPS and Board of Education approval. Vale estimated annual maintenance costs at "about $1,000-2,000" and said the design reduces mulch in favor of hardscape to lower ongoing upkeep.
Chair Greg Chernack moved that Section 5 provide a $10,000 donation contingent on required approvals and that the Council develop guidelines to govern future donation requests. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Why it matters: The donation accelerates fundraising for a school improvement project that depends on school-district approval; the Council also signaled it will create clearer internal rules for future municipal donations.
