Council debates mountain-bike event over borough trails after DEP raises concerns

Administrator Bonnie Fleming told the council the DEP "was concerned that the area is not ready for this number of riders." Attorney Barry Goodman advised the council to keep DEP informed of the borough's approach to trail use.
Councilman Strange said he reviewed the event proposal and supported allowing the rides, arguing the proposal represents usage similar to what trails experience on three consecutive weekends and that the borough could benefit when people enjoy the space. Council discussion focused on route alternatives, avoiding sensitive areas, the potential for rain to exacerbate trail impacts, riders moving in waves, executive-order restrictions, and the need to work with event planners and the DEP to reduce resident concerns.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; council members directed staff to continue coordination and to review maps and alternative routes. The discussion will likely inform any future approvals or limitations tied to DEP guidance and municipal permitting.
