The Planning Commission voted Jan. 26 to approve a site plan modification at First Baptist Church, 33400 Shiawassee, allowing a modest addition to the southwest corner of the building and a barrier‑free ramp to improve access and facilitate safe casket handling during funerals.
Dan Waters of Wakeley Associates, presenting for the church, said the proposal includes raising a small plaza area to sanctuary level, adding a ramp from the parking lot, and installing a platform lift to improve access to the basement social hall. He said the design uses matching materials so the addition complements existing building fabric in the historic district. The historic commission previously voted unanimously to recommend approval.
Commissioners discussed circulation, stair alignment and historic compatibility; the motion to approve found the changes met zoning and nonresidential design standards (section 35‑53) and noted the project addressed ADA and safety concerns.
The plan was approved by voice vote; staff and the applicant said they will coordinate final details with the building official and provide required site elements before construction.
