At its meeting, the Hancock County advisory committee voted to form a four-member subcommittee to compile an executive summary of materials on a proposed data-center overlay and to work with planning staff and the department attorney on a recommendation for the planning commission. The motion was made by a committee member (speaker 10) and seconded by the planning commission representative (speaker 3); the chair then called the roll and announced the motion carried.
The subcommittee was described as a compilation body, not a policy-drafting body. The chair and several members stressed the subcommittee should gather and summarize only materials already made available to the full committee, add footnotes or source notes where needed, and make its product available for committee review before any recommendation is forwarded to the planning commission. The chair said the subcommittee would coordinate with Rhonda Cook, the planning and zoning department attorney, to shape the material in a legally coherent form.
“I make a motion that myself, Derek Adams, miss Willard, miss Oldham, and mister Oberhauser, form a small subcommittee, to scribe together the information that’s shared with this committee, to work with, Rhonda to compile the information,” a committee member (speaker 10) said during the meeting. The motion drew discussion about keeping the subcommittee below a quorum so the full committee could still review materials; after a roll call the chair announced the motion carried.
Committee members set a tentative timeline that would allow the subcommittee to meet and produce a draft for full-committee review in late July or early August; a committee member noted the broader planning commission recommendation is due by October. The committee also asked members to email their top concerns and opportunities to staff so the subcommittee can reflect committee priorities in its summary.
The committee agreed to consider adding a public input segment to the next meeting, allowing residents both for and against potential data centers to speak. The meeting adjourned after scheduling discussion and the votes to approve minutes and the subcommittee.
