Board asks town council to revisit UDO notice rules for demolitions and major projects

The Board of Architectural Review voted to ask town council to review and revise sections of the Unified Development Ordinance that govern public notice so they better align with the board's historic-district notification practices.
Members said the UDO currently requires property posting and website notification but no direct neighbor mailings or newspaper notice. Chair (S2) argued stronger notification is important for demolition requests and other major changes: "I think the notification of property owners is, pretty important," the chair said, adding that a yard sign and website posting may not reach affected neighbors.
Board members discussed whether the request should target demolition only or include all major projects; several favored focusing on demolition and significant new construction. Committee member (S8) moved that the board request council to review UDO sections 5.10, 5.11 and 5.12 to improve neighbor and public notification; the motion was seconded and passed. The board asked staff to coordinate with the planning department and council to pursue the change.
The motion does not itself change the UDO; it asks council and planning staff to evaluate and, if appropriate, amend the ordinance to restore or strengthen neighbor notification for demolition and other major cases.
