DPW renovation moves forward; new S.12th Street parking lot opens, second lot under construction

Igor Sikiric, Superintendent of the Department of Public Works, updated the Board on ongoing DPW renovation work and related village construction projects. He said exterior sheathing for the new truck garage is largely installed, the salt shed shell is complete, concrete pads for dumpster storage are in place, and a modular office building was delivered and interior work has begun. The project has experienced weather-related delays but is "moving along well," and Sikiric estimated substantial completion of the project this summer if work continues as anticipated.
Sikiric also reported on parking-lot work: the new lot at 300 S.12th Street is open to the public, and construction on a second lot in the existing S.12th Street area began the week of May 6 with anticipated completion in early June. He said the final step of the larger S.12th Street project will be construction of a new park on the site once parking work is complete.
The DPW report included routine operational metrics: in April the Village handled roughly 510 tons of refuse and recycling (386 tons municipal solid waste, 15 tons newspaper, 24 tons commingled recyclables, 35 tons construction and demolition debris, and 50 tons of yard waste), approximately 40 potholes were repaired in April, and about 30 street signs were repaired, replaced or relocated. Sikiric reminded residents about proper recycling and bulk/e-waste scheduling rules and noted a double collection day is scheduled before Memorial Day.
Trustees asked staff about timelines and the mayor and staff tied the DPW work to broader community projects already in construction. No additional votes were taken on DPW contracts at the May 15 meeting.
