West Seneca school board elects leadership, appoints clerk and outlines process to fill midterm vacancy

Marla Greenberg was elected president of the West Seneca Central School District Board of Education during the board’s organizational meeting and was sworn into office after a unanimous roll-call vote.
The board also elected Ed Bedian as vice president and approved a motion to appoint Melissa Schutrom as district clerk for the year. The votes for those organizational items were taken by roll call and recorded as unanimous where noted.
Superintendent Lisa Krueger told the board the meeting began with an executive session on personnel and that the board had discussed how to respond to the midterm vacancy created by Zach Armstrong’s recent resignation. Krueger said the board considered three options: hold a special election (which preserves seven members but is costly), leave the seat vacant until the May election (operate with six members), or solicit letters of interest and appoint an interim member. The board signaled a preference to solicit letters of interest. Krueger said residents who are qualified may submit a letter to district clerk Melissa Schutrom by July 21 at 3 p.m.; the board plans to review letters and, if there is more than one applicant, meet with candidates in late July before making a public announcement of any appointment. Krueger clarified that any interim appointee would serve through June 30, 2027, and the position would be on the ballot the following May for a full term.
The meeting also approved multiple personnel items and routine annual appointments. Motions to abolish and create certain classified positions (agenda items 7a and 7b) passed by voice vote, and the consent agenda (items 9–11) passed without discussion.
Board members volunteered for liaison and committee roles for the year, including Erie County Association of School Boards delegations, audit, budget advisory, facilities, policy, safety, special education advisory, strategic planning and community education committees.
The board adjourned after a brief board discussion and a vote to close the meeting.
