St. Louis County board approves budget adjustments, union contracts, fleet purchases and timber-contract updates

In central management, the board approved three collective bargaining settlements covering 2026–2028: the Deputy Sheriffs Association agreement, the deputy sheriff supervisor unit (represented by the Minnesota Public Employees Association) and the merit supervisory unit (represented by the Arrowhead Public Services Union). Deputy Administrator Gottschall described the settlements as following a common wage pattern (roughly 3–4% increases) with adjustments to pay-plan steps and adoption of paid-family-leave and earned sick-time provisions. Each contract was moved and approved by voice vote.
The board approved a reallocation of a vacant FTE to create a digital forensic technician position (board letter "26 2 to 6") to support investigations of internet-enabled crimes and digital-evidence management; administrators estimated the net fiscal impact would be absorbed within the sheriff’s budget and cited roughly $10,000 as a minimal increase.
On natural resources, Director Jason Meyer and Deputy Director Nate Anderson presented revisions to the county’s timber-harvesting contract template (last revised circa 2008). The updates align invasive-species measures with state contracts, change extension handling to require a prepayment toward timber value, remove a past default-penalty provision that proved hard to implement, and add spill-kit requirements. The board approved the updated standard terms and conditions.
